EDWARD LANDON
This painting has a very rich provenance as it was purchased by Ms Lora Bragg (Charleston SC, founder of public library and Art Museums in Charleston amoung other accomplishments) a southern socialite during her many trips to the Northeast in the 1930's. It had a prominent place in Ms Braggs home (38 Chalmers Street)directly above her fireplace in her living room for the entire time she owned it. Which was until her death upon which time she willed the painting to my grandmother Eleanor "Hope" Johnson. Upon my grandmother's passing the painting then went to my mother. I am now selling this for my mother.
The painting is 21" x 23" and is entitled "August 1934 II". The title is interesting as the artists full name is Edward August Landon. Mr Landon's descendants were pleased to hear of this long forgotton and previously unknown piece. It is a great find and rare opportunity for the Landon collector. His prints continually sell for hundreds up to thousands of dollars! You can now own an ORIGINAL
Edward Landon studied at the Hartford Art School and the Art Students League. He was a recipient of a scholarship grant from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 and was awarded a Fulbright research fellowship to Norway in 1951.
Mr. Landon was a pioneer in the development of serigraphy in the 1940's and 1950's. (The word serigraphy was derived from the Greek words seri - silk and graphics - writing.) Besides working in the medium, he taught and lectured widely on the subject and was responsible for introducing it into Europe.
In addition to having had more than thirty five one-man exhibitions in both the United States and Europe, his serigraphs are included in all major public print collections throughout the world including the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; the Library of Congress; the Metropolitan Museum; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Modern Art; the National Gallery, Stockholm; Art Museums in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem; the San Francisco Museum; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and many others. His print "Buffoon" together with color separation proofs is on permanent display as representing the medium at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
