Info about - Lobkowicz

Joseph Franz Maximilian Lobkowicz - perhaps the most significant Lobkowicz - (1772-1816), He wad the seventh prince Lobkowicz and was bestowed the first Duke of Roudnice by Emperor Joseph II. Joseph Franz Maximilian remains best known as a great lover of music and patron of Beethoven, who dedicated numerous works to Lobkowicz, including the 3rd (Eroica), 5th and 6th (Pastoral) Symphonies, the Opus 18 String Quartets and the Triple Concerto.

The Lobkowicz family is among the oldest Bohemian noble families, dating back to the 14th century. On the scale of few other families in Central Europe, they have identified themselves through the architecture, paintings, books, music and decorative arts they commissioned. They have also played an active role in European politics, as Princes of the Holy Roman Empire, High Chancellors of Bohemia, Dukes of Sagan and Roudnice and Princes of High Chlumec

In the early 17th century, the Lobkowiczes began to play an expanded role in the Catholic inner circles of the Hapsburg court. Zdenek Vojtech, 1st Prince Lobkowicz (1568-1628), was Chancellor of the Czech Kingdom and the right-hand man of Emperors Rudolf II, Mathias and Ferdinand II. Following the battle of White Mountain in 1620 on the outskirts of Prague, the family's fortunes increased dramatically, including Polyxena Lobkowicz's purchase of Nelahozeves castle in 1623.

The only child of Zdenek Vojtech and Polyxena, was Vaclav Eusebius, 2nd Prince Lobkowicz and Bohemian Chancellor (1609-1677), who became one of the most influential European statesmen of the 17th century. He raised his own regiment to fight in the Thirty Years War in 1632, and subsequently became a counselor at the court in Vienna, President of the Imperial War Cabinet after 1652 and President of the Imperial Privy Counsel after 1669. His most lasting contributions, however, were the family palaces he had reconstructed by Italian architects and stuccoists in the Baroque style, including the Lobkowicz Palace in Prague and Roudnice castle, which served as the family seat until 1948.

Emperor Joseph II bestowed upon the 7th Prince Lobkowicz, Joseph Franz Maximilian Lobkowicz (1772-1816), the title Duke of Roudnice in 1786.Joseph Franz Maximilian remains best known as a great lover of music and patron of Beethoven, who dedicated numerous works to Lobkowicz, including the 3rd (Eroica), 5th and 6th (Pastoral) Symphonies, the Opus 18 String Quartets and the Triple Concerto.

Maximilian Lobkowicz (1888-1967), the last heir to occupy Roudnice, was a lawyer, politician and diplomat. He supported the new Czechoslovak state of 1918 at every juncture, even as it abolished official titles and redistributed certain properties. During the Second World War, all of his holdings were confiscated by the Nazis because he represented the Czechoslovak government in exile as Ambassador at the Court of St. James in England. He again had to flee in 1948 after the Communists took over, this time exiled and permanently settling in America.
In 1991, President Vaclav Havel signed three acts providing for the return of confiscated property. The son and grandson of Maximilian, Martin and William, undertook the task of tracing down and reclaiming most of the treasures that had been taken from the family. Today, the family is pleased to have reunited most of the Lobkowicz collections at Nelahozeves Castle, opening the exhibition "Six Centuries of European Art Patronage"
