We have a constant stream of people bringing us stuff and we get requests to come look at new things everyday. Being in the Antiques business these days demands that one of us is constantly on the road, doing pickups, deliveries, appraisals, in home consultations, meeting with restorers and conservationists and traveling to specialized libraries and collections for research. Pre 1868. In the shape of a folded letter (perhaps to indicate love letter), with conforming interior tray. Exterior is soft black with design in gold of the Owasawara crest and of two characters; interior is nashiji (sprinkled gold) throughout.
On interior of lid is a label, c. 1890s, placed by an earlier collector: "This represents a Japanese knot. Daimio (lord) Owasawara, Yeddo." Yeddo is the old spelling of Edo, modern Tokyo. The daimyo of "Shoen"——landed estates (not unlike medieval manors in the West)——numbered in the thousands [Collcutt et al, Cultural Atlas of Japan, 1988].

"Yeddo" indicates the Edo (Tokyo) residence of this lord, since during Tokugawa Shogunate feudal lords were required to spend part of each year in residence at the capital. This piece was made to be used in the household of the lord of Owasawara, and was not made for market. #67-7027-3050

A cased model of The Sovereign of the Seas 1852
Sovereign of the Seas was a clipper ship launched in 1852. She was built by Donald McKay of East Boston in the U.S.A. She was the first ship to travel more than 400 miles in 24 hours. On the second leg of her maiden voyage, she set a record passage from Honolulu Hawaii to New York, arriving in 82 days. She then broke the record to liverpool England, making the passage in 13 days, 13.5 hours. In 1853 she was chartered by James Baines & Co. of the Black Ball Line, Liverpool for the Australia trade. On that route in 1854, she recorded the fastest speed ever for a sailing ship, logging 22 knots.

The largest and fastest of the “Extreme” Clipper ships
Which right from the beginning was pronounced to be "the longest, sharpest, and the most beautiful merchant ship in the world."
Captain McKay brought the Sovereign of the Seas back from Honolulu around the Horn to New York in the record time of 82 days. She had been gone for nine months and in that time earned for her owner and builder Donald McKay the princely sum of $138,000.

The day we ran 430 miles she had the wind on the larboard quarter and carried all drawing sail from the topsail down, but had the topmast been sound she could have borne the topmast-studding sail also. The sea was high and broken, the weather alternately clear and cloudy, with heavy showers, and at night we had occasional glimpses of moonlight She ran about as fast as the sea and when struck by a squall would send the spray masthead high. Now and then she would fly up a point and heeling over skim along between the deep valleys of the waves, and then, brought to her course again, righten with majestic ease and as if taking a fresh start would seem to bound from wave to wave.
