Magnificent French, Ormolu and Bronze Figural clock with Voltaire in an original chocolate brown patinated bronze. 22.5" high x 14" deep. The white marble tower profusely decorated with Oak leaves, acorns, ribbons, bows. swags, and floral sprays all on dramatic paw feet. Dial marked "R. WEGELIN, 3 Rue Bellecour a Lyon" and the just serviced perfectly working movement marked "HORLOCERIE, PARIS" Chimes on the hour and the half. SOLD net - Pierre Jules Mene French 1810 - 1879 Bronze of Hunting Dogs flushing a bird. "Deux Chiens a l'arret devant une perdrix" 16.25" X 8 3/4". A superior example, with beautiful original chocolate patina, Ca 1840's. Mene along with Barye was one of the best of the 19th C. animaliers and like Barye, Mene cast all his work in his own foundry and offered a variety of patinations. The bold, deep sharply incised printed signature identifies this as an early cast. In 1894, 15 years after his death, the Susse foundry acquired the rights to his work and produced casts marked "Susse foundeur editeur, Paris" |
